2023 Sentinel North Scientific Meeting: a catalyst for discovery and innovation

More than 300 participants from academia, northern organizations, federal and provincial agencies, and the public and private sectors gathered at the 2023 Sentinel North Science Meeting, a key interdisciplinary research conference that builds on collaboration and networking to advance research on a wide range of northern issues.

From changes in terrestrial and marine ecosystems to mental health, food security and the challenges posed by permafrost thawing, the themes explored at the meeting reflect the significant advances made by the Sentinel North program since its inception in 2017, which were recently published in a first Compendium of Research.

The event welcomed more than 15 people representing 10 northern organizations, the largest Nordic delegation to a Sentinel North Scientific Meeting to date. Their presence reinforced the crucial importance of partnership research between members of the northern and scientific communities, to tackle together the challenges facing Arctic and sub-Arctic regions.

"Once again this year, the Sentinel North Scientific Meeting saw some very stimulating exchanges. For my part, I was greatly impressed by the 160 students present, who stood out not only for their innovative projects, but also for the effort they made to adapt their presentations, which facilitated exchanges between people from very diverse backgrounds. There's a great future for northern research," says Pierre Legagneux, Scientific Chair of the meeting, holder of a Sentinel North Chair and Professor of Biology at Université Laval.

Converging research to reach new horizons

Since 2017, Sentinel North has carried a transformative vision of research at Université Laval, which is now generating tangible societal benefits for the North.

The program has become a major driver of impact within the institution, helping to implement innovative approaches to research, with interdisciplinarity and technological innovation as key cornerstones.
