Through their close interactions, humans and the environment in an arctic context form a distinct system that is at the heart of the Sentinel North research program.
Section 1
ENVIRONMENT
Large-scale changes in the Arctic cause disruption of terrestrial and marine ecosystems (e.g. reduction of ice packs, permafrost thaw, impacts on biodiversity), introduce various contaminants, affect ecosystem services (e.g. access to food and water), and influence infrastructure, urbanization and the social environment.
Section 2
HUMAN
Environmental changes in the Arctic have a direct impact on human health at the cardiometabolic, microbiota (e.g. nutrition, food security) and mental (e.g. social environment, photoperiod) levels.
